Many leaders I know can tell you about their last crisis, but few can tell you about their last “first.”

That’s not an accident. The longer you lead, the better you get at operating from your strengths. You stop putting yourself in situations where you have to be a beginner. And without realizing it, you stop trying new things.

But the very discomfort you learn to avoid is often where growth is waiting.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Try it this week. Better yet, ask it of yourself before you ask it of someone else.
